  • Dunkirk Elementary School - June 18, 2013

Description: Dunkirk Elementary School is a new, 79,000-square-foot ECE-5 neighborhood school located in Denver's Green Valley Ranch development. The floor plan is derived from a pinwheel configuration, which places the core shared-use elements of the program at the center of the school. At the center of the plan is a community room / commons. From that space, one may access the learning commons (library), main office, computer lab, gymnasium, and music and art rooms. Off of the central community room, various wings of the school spinoff: ECE to the east, cafeteria to the north, elementary classes to the west and learning commons to the south. Within the classroom wings, rooms are pulled apart slightly in order to form small break-out areas and resource rooms open to the corridors. Grade levels are grouped around these open areas in order to establish informal class "houses" by grade and a variety of learning environments within the classroom wings. An extension of the floor plan's pinwheel parti, the concept for the school focuses on the facility as a "kinetic" community center, providing energy and activity for the surrounding neighborhood. The exterior design of the building strives to represent movement and kinetic energy. The composition of brick and the playful spiral appearance of windows pick up on the energetic movement of the pinwheel. The building's arrangement presents a face to the community in each direction. Sliding, dynamic planes such as retaining walls, roof canopies and window sunshades create a slight asymmetry that insinuates movement on the building facade.
