  • Breckenridge Brewery Littleton - June 18, 2014

Description: Hyder Construction has broken ground Breckenridge Brewery's new Littleton location. The new campus sits along the South Platte River and has a $17 million construction budget. Breckenridge experienced a lot of growth in the last few years, with demand exceeding supply. The 12-acre campus consists of three buildings and provides the much-needed space for Colorado's fifth largest brewer. Brewhouse: A 21,000-square-foot building, where the beer is brewed. The building also houses the brewery's corporate and operations offices. Production building: A 50,000-sf building home to the fermentation tanks, packaging, bottling, canning, and dry and cold storage. The Farmhouse: A 9,200-sf restaurant that captures the farm theme of the site with its timber frame and array of reclaimed materials. Once fabricated, the brewery and packaging equipment is shipped to the site in approximately 40 shipping containers, which arrive ready for installation. • Lake County School District, Lake County High School - May 30, 2014

Description: H+L Architecture was selected to design the new high school renovation and addition. The mission - a high school that has the best of everything but doesn't cost too much and stays in budget; a renovation that also includes a middle school addition, and remains open while it's being built. This new school will blend into Lake County's natural environment while celebrating its unique mining heritage. H+L worked closely with the school's Design Advisory Group (DAG) to develop a concept that revealed not only a beautiful renovation concept equipped to educate 21st century students, but one that also celebrates Leadville's natural environment and history. The renovation transforms the wood shop/auto mechanics area into a new library/commons area. A new high school classroom area addition - a double stacked wing - will include up-to-date science labs and wireless connection throughout, making every area a learning environment. Adjacent to the high school will be the new middle school, a single-story wing to house 7th and 8th graders. The existing two-story classroom wing will continue to educate students during the renovation. Once the new additions are built, this wing will be removed. As the building morphs into its new shape and design, the exterior site will also change. The change in traffic flow shifts bus pick-up and drop-off from the north to the west side of the high school. The parent drop off and pick up will be reconfigured to a safer flow.

  • Pueblo County School District 70, High School Renovation - May 30, 2014

Description: Pueblo County High School has a rich heritage in the community including numerous staff and faculty that are former students of the school. Therefore, keeping the community involved in the design of the school was vital to the project. During the initial master planning stage, members of the community, faculty and staff joined H+L to discuss and prioritize the project's goals, which resulted in rethinking the way the school was configured. This level of stakeholder involvement continued throughout the design process. In addition to the community's goals, the school district also established goals for the project, including addressing the existing layout of the building. Due to the building's various additions over the years, the circulation patterns, which occurred outdoors, needed to be improved upon as well as the security access to the building. H+L designed new building additions to provide the desired enhancements, including relocating and centralizing the administrative offices in the building; relocating and emphasizing the main building entry; and providing previously nonexistent, fully enclosed circulation paths to all portions of the building. In addition, the athletic facilities were improved upon with a new auxiliary gymnasium, which included associated team rooms, a training room and coaching staff offices. The performing arts facilities at the school were also consolidated near the auditorium, which allows for larger and more functional spaces, including direct access to the stage for drama, band and vocal programs. Performance lighting and sound systems in the auditorium were also replaced. Site improvements for the school included the creation of separate parent drop-off and bus drop-off circulation loops on opposite sides of the building to minimize student and vehicle interaction. In addition, a new enclosed exterior courtyard near the commons area allows for secure outdoor functions for both teaching and student activities. The community and school district have been extremely supportive throughout the duration of the project. Construction of these improvements will be phased and are scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2015.
