  • Newalta U.S. Headquarters - March 7, 2014

Description: Newalta is a Canada-based company that provides engineered, innovative, solutions to improve its customers' environmental performance through recycling and recovery. Elsy Studios was brought in to help establish Newalta's identity in the U.S. marketplace with an airy, open space in the heart of downtown Denver. Despite strict limitations on ceiling heights at their 50th floor office, we were able to accomplish an open feel with full-height glazing around the perimeter allowing energizing daylight to stream in, and by bringing the ceiling down in the meeting areas and the break room to create a more intimate and collaborative feel. Newalta came to us with a vision for a clean and modern space that would help attract and retain employees. Through our collaboration and creative thinking, Elsy Studios helped bring their vision of a timelessly elegant workplace to life.

  • Crofton Elementary School - March 4, 2014

Description: The 2012 Denver Public Schools Bond included funding for renovations and additions at Crofton Elementary. The scope of work consists of a six-classroom "cottage" addition, a gym addition, and critically needed mechanical and accessibility improvements to the original, historic school building. The scope is intended to support the space needs of the highly successful University Prep school and address major deferred maintenance issues. In the time since the passage of the bond, the applicability of the "cottage" concept for the project came into question for the following reasons: - The site has limited open space. A single-story cottage would have a massive impact on the area available to children for outdoor activities. - Existing easements restrict the possible locations for a cottage addition. - The wood frame construction type previously associated with the "cottage" concept is currently more expensive due to the current multi-family residential building boom. It would not be an economical construction type for building the gymnasium. - There are security concerns relating to the neighborhood's homeless population and the impending closure of Eddie Maestas Park. An addition that directly connects to the existing building will provide better security and supervision for the students. - Maintenance and supervision concerns relating to a detached building. Because of these concerns, Humphries Poli Architects was asked to perform a concept design phase and charrette to explore options to fulfill the school's needs.

  • 2300 Welton Residences - March 4, 2014

Description: The Five Points neighborhood is one of Denver's oldest established city neighborhoods. The location of 2300 Welton marks the gateway to the Five Points business and entertainment district from the downtown commercial corridor. Known for its vibrant cultural diversity, Historic Welton Street is famous for the collection of bars and clubs that hosted prominent jazz musicians such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. The design of 2300 Welton, a workforce housing development, reflects the characteristics of the Five Points community mentioned above. The site consists of two buildings (one at 2300 Welton, the other at 501 Park Avenue West) and a total of 223 dwelling units. The sloping roof line along Park Avenue West creates a relationship between the two buildings separated by the alley. The off-white facade of the 2300 Welton building is balanced by the dark charcoal facade on the 501 Park Avenue West building. The design does not attempt to portray the buildings as one, but conveys their relationship through color and geometry. The two structures combine to form a unified whole, under a sloping silhouette fronting Park Avenue.

Description: The new 30,000 square foot AAM facility will feature 12,500 square feet of exhibition space - including six galleries, one of which will also act as a black box theatre - as well as an education classroom, museum shop, and cafe. These elements include a grand staircase along the South Spring Street side of the building that allows for natural blending of the outdoor and the interior spaces of the museum to create contemplative and relaxing breaks between gallery spaces infused with natural light; a "moving room" glass elevator that will animate the northeast corner of the new AAM where South Spring Street and East Hyman Avenue meet; a woven exterior screen and roof structure that will allow the building to remain a transparent facility that will marry interior and exterior spaces; and a rooftop sculpture terrace facing Aspen's picturesque main skiing/snowboarding mountain, Ajax Mountain.
